I’ve been an avid reader since first grade in elementary school when I devoured books and consider going to the library an exciting outing (I still do!). And bonus, once a month I got to choose two to buy from Scholastic Books. What a treat.

This love has stayed with me my whole life but sadly I do find myself spending more time on social media and watching various vlogs than reading. And it’s time to reverse that trend because reading is actually a great tool to combat brain decline and aid mental and physical health.

Here are a few key benefits:

  • Improves brain connectivity
  • Prevents cognitive decline as you age
  • Improves memory
  • Improves concentration
  • Lowers blood pressure and heart rate
  • Improves sleep quality
  • Fights anxiety and depression
  • Increases empathy
  • Improves critical thinking skills
  • Increases vocabulary and comprehension

The jury is still out on what subject matter provides a greater benefit, though books might have a slight edge over periodicals.

Either way, it’s made me realize I need to make one of first loves a greater part of my life again. Much like physical exercise, research suggests reading at least 30 minutes a day and I’m in.

How about you?

One response to “Keep Reading…It’s Good for You”

  1. This is a great topic. I am not much of a reader, it puts me to sleep. Probably because I need good lighting to read, and my free time is in the evening; where it is darker, too dark for me, to read.
