I am not into fashion per se, but I do like quality, ethically made clothes–Eileen Fisher and Peruvian Connection are two favorites–and for decades I had the same measurements and always knew what size to order in these brands.

Then menopause hit and weight crept on. And my stalwart jeans became too snug to wear and some of my fav shorter jackets could no longer be buttoned. And I realized certain clothes were emphasizing parts of me that I didn’t want emphasized!

It was depressing but still I kept most of these clothes. Even though I wasn’t wearing them and quite possibly would never wear them again. I would see them in my closet and in storage and they mocked me. My inner critic shook her head and said “How did you let yourself get like this?”

Finally, I gave myself a bit of grace.

While I may not be happy with my current physique, this is where I’m at. Keeping clothes that no longer fit served no purpose. And in fact, they made me feel hopeless.

So I’m slowly letting them go–one being a pair of black leather pants, size 4, that I know I would never fit into again. Another a sweet crocheted cardigan (medium) that I could still wear but it looked like I’d put on my daughter’s top! (I have since sold both of those.) I’ve donated a black crepe wool pencil skirt that I used to wear all the time and am considering what to do with a nice Pendleton wool jacket.

More work to do, but my goal is to only keep clothes that fit and I actually wear and like how they look on me.

How about you? Are you keeping clothes that no longer fit?

Some of you may be wondering if I’m doing anything to try and lose the hormonal weight. I am, but that’s a topic for another day.

  1. I like this topic. I like reading what you do, and maybe I should think about doing the same.
